What are Dasti Summons?

In our last post, we spoke about Persian being the official court language (the language of our former rulers), which soon gave way to the English language (the language of our subsequent ruler), who also included local/regional languages - apart from English language - for ease and convenience of the local people and local judicial officers.

Which is why, in the lower courts - the proceedings are - as a matter of routine! - conducted in local languages so that the petitioners/defendants can understand it, the lawyers can understand it, the judges can understand it and the public can understand it -- better.

What's really cool to note is the remnants of Persian language, which is found even today as well. Take for example, the word - "DASTI" Summons.

Summons, I'm sure you can understand. That is when a court calls upon a person to appear before it.

But what -- in the name of His Lordships -- is 'DASTI'. And no - it has nothing to do with 'Dast' - the hindi word for diarrhoea.

Dasti -- a persian word - means "by hand".

Therefore, Dasti Summons = Summons which are hand delivered to the person (who is to appear before the court). And now...you know!
